Eye Care During the Summer
How do you protect your eyes? There is an easy solution for your skin, sunscreen. Eye care during the summer is just as important as your skin care. Here are our best tips for eye care during summer!
1. Sunglasses – For most people, sunglasses are a year-round accessory. Wearing sunglasses that provide complete ultraviolet protection is very important. This is the best way to protect your eyes from UVR exposure. Purchasing and wearing sunglasses consistently, even wearing them when it’s cloudy outside, is key when it comes to eye care during the summer.
2. Hats – Minimizing the risk of ultraviolet rays only starts with wearing sunglasses. Usually, sunglasses leave gaps along the side where you are still being exposed to UVR. To prevent this extra exposure of UVR, it is highly recommended to add a hat with a brim of at least 3 inches wide. Adding a hat, and wearing protective sunglasses decreases your UVR exposure significantly.
3. Goggles – When’s the last time you went swimming? If you haven’t been in a while, your first time in the pool can feel awful on your eyes. The chlorine in pools, which is added to the water to protect you from exposure to germs, can hurt your eyes. The best and simple solution for protecting your eyes from chlorine, is to wear goggles. Just as it’s important to wear sunglasses consistently, it’s important to consistently wear goggles every time you plan on going swimming. This tip also applies to when you are swimming in the ocean, as the ocean also contains contaminants that can hurt your eyes. Goggles are an important step to eye care during the summer, as you are usually only swimming during the warmer months of the year.
4. Drink water and eat healthy – During the summer, you are more likely to become dehydrated and this can affect your eyes. If you are suffering from serious dehydration, your body suffers to be able to produce tears, which can cause dry eye problems. Being sure to drink plenty of water, eat healthy, adding a daily vitamin supplement can prevent and reverse most of the negative symptoms of dehydration.
